The Miami Semester program is an academic program for visiting undergraduate students currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in the United States or abroad.

Students may attend UM in their sophomore, junior or senior year for one or two semesters. Both domestic and international students are eligible to apply.

Application Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program
  • Grade point average of at least 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale)
  • Letter of Recommendation from a current or recent professor
  • Letter of good academic standing from your current university/college
  • Official college transcript(s) from all undergraduate institutions attended
  • Statement of Purpose - 300 words

International Applicants are required to send the following additional documents to the Miami Semester office: 

  • Official TOEFL or IELTS score - if your native language is not English
  • Copy of the ID page of your passport
  • Copy of your student visa - if you are already studying in the U.S.
  • Bank Sponsorship Letter - if you require a student visa

    Get started on your application online. Be sure to select the Non-Degree Online Application. You can save your application progress and return any time to continue where you left off.

  • Submit your application and pay the application fee

    A $75 nonrefundable application fee is required when you submit your application online.

  • Set up your CaneLink account

    After you submit your application online, you will be sent an email with your Cane ID and a temporary password to log on to CaneLink, the University of Miami student information system. 

  • Email supplemental documents to

    You will need to submit:

    • A letter of recommendation from a current or recent professor
    • A 300-word statement of purpose
    • A letter of good academic standing from your current university/college

  • Additional application materials for international students

    International students are required to complete the following steps and to provide the following documents:

    1. Copy of the ID page of your passport
    2. Official test scores - All students whose native language is not English are required to submit official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). For information on scores visit the TOEFL or Other English Proficiency Requirements page.
    3. Copy of your student visa (if you are already studying in the U.S.)
    4. Bank verification or official statement of sponsorship (if you are applying for a student visa):  submit a bank letter (see example) on official letterhead stating that the person responsible for your living and personal expenses while studying at the University of Miami has a minimum of $38,000 USD in his/her account, or submit a recent bank statement showing an equivalent balance of $38,000 USD. The amount is for one semester during the 2020 - 2021 academic year.

    Fall and summer courses are available at the end of March. Spring courses are available at the end of October. Search for classes here>

  • Course Request Form

    Submit the Course Request Form to the Miami Semester - Visiting Student Program office with the classes you are interested in taking. 

  • Application Deadlines

    Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Once all supplemental documents have been received, allow two weeks for processing and review. It may take longer if additional materials, such as design portfolios, need to be considered. Notification of admission will be sent by email.
